Billy’s Surprise

Billy sat at his computer staring at the screen.

It had been a while since he really sat down and did anything to relax. Most of the time he’d been here it had been work. Little time for fun and games now that he was on a First Team. Now though, he had a chance, some time to himself, to relax and unwind. Yet he found himself unsure what to do. He could play a game, but most of them weren’t challenging anymore. He thought about it for a bit and decided to go poke around in someone else business. He pulled up a directory of servers he hadn’t yet had the chance to compromise and picked one at random. From there it was mostly the usual business, gain low-level access, work your way up from one account to another. All it took was one user with an easy to guess password, or an IT admin who overlooked one little flaw, and he was in. This was good, there was nothing important here. No mission, no goal, just unfettered access to someone else’s data because he COULD.

Then something strange happened. Someone messaged him “Good work getting in’ You’ve got some skill, but my question is why?”

Billy stared at his screen for a moment, formulating his response. From what he could tell the message was from the system admin. Getting blocked was one thing, getting caught was an entirely different prospect and not one that Billy was used to. Moreover, instead of just booting him he was sitting here messaging him? What’s the deal with this guy?

Billy typed out “Just for the challenge, it looked like a secure system. I wanted to see if I could breach it.”

The response came back quickly enough “Well hats off to you then, I didn’t make it easy. We should meet. You know where the coffee house on 45th street is?”

“Meet? Nice try no chance am I walking right into the cops.” Billy replied.

The terminal lit up “No cops, I promise. I just… want to meet you. I recognize the handle, I’ve seen some of your other work, and I want to meet the man behind the myth.”

Billy looked thoughtfully at the screen. Truth was he was intrigued, and in theory The Company would get him out of whatever trouble he got into. “OK sure, when”

“Tomorrow at 3:00.” came the response “I’ll be in the green hat.” and then the message closed, and Billy was summarily booted from the system.

A smile crossed his face. While they were talking he had fired up another thread, and accessed the company’s personnel files. He found the head of IT right away
