So sorry for being so long between updates!
I had no idea how loud we were being until round three, when Mr. Lin, David’s father, started pounding on the door and yelling in Cantonese. When he sees Tony and I he yells for David, and once he arrives they have an argument in Cantonese. He leaves, allowing me to finally get dressed, as well as Tony, and we do the walk of shame out of the house. The four of us decide then to head to McDonald’s, because it’s just about the only place open for ice cream. Of all things, once we arrive there we find Vince, sitting with four large fries in front of him.
Jen ends up talking to David, and then leaving us to go hang out with Vince. Her prerogative, but I think David was a little hurt, so I tried to make it up to him by being a little playful. While we’re eating, I email the realtor, and get a response back within minutes, asking if he can call me. The phone call follows a few short minutes later, I give him my criteria and we set up an appointment to meet at his office at eleven the following morning.
David says we can just use our fists to break it, and I say I’d like to see that. Somehow, the conversation devolves into me offering to make his bedtime imagery extra worthwhile, and Tony isn’t fond of this. So the boys pull off a rock, paper, scissors match, and David wins for once. I smile, whisper the image to him (Jen and I, tending to his needs), and then back off, watching the grin spread across his face.
See, one of Donovan’s requests was that we get Ben up to speed on modern times, so I figured that I could get a head start on that. I receive a call back, informing me that Ben destroyed the phone Donovan gave him, but told me where he might be found. Apparently, the poor guy has been living at the homeless shelter. Upon arrival, the minister that met me at the door leads me to him, but gestures for me to be quiet, as Ben is reading to a group of children.
It’s a very sweet sight to behold and hear, and a very different side of him than what I have seen. So I have some hope that he can improve. We head outside to talk, and he relaxes once he learns I am not there to give him an order from Donovan. I explain why I am there, and show him the basics of a smartphone, including how to access and browse the internet. We talk, a little bit about him, and a little bit about me, albeit not much, and he makes a comment about not having much. Feeling bad for him, I offer to take him to Walmart and get him a few things he can keep in a knapsack, so that he can have more than the clothes on his back. He seems grateful for this.
I apologize to Donovan and check my bike over, then drag Ben out of the house so that our mutual boss can take care of the mess and not go off on us all angry. If he does that sort of thing, I don’t know. Once outside, Ben scans the skyline, and asks to be taken to one of the taller buildings in the city. It just so happens to be an older, historical hotel. We sneak inside and go up a floor before getting the elevator to the top floor. He has an apology for me, he says, and asks me to wait once we get off the elevator. He then heads down the hallway, proceeding to check each door until he finds one that is open, and heads inside, gesturing for me to follow him.
I do, being a little more wary, and he slides open the door to a balcony and heads out, gesturing for me to go with him. The view is wonderful. He moves behind me, wrapping his arms around me and then I hear a sudden fwoosh!. Looking back I catch a glimpse of wings – but not the leathery, bat-like wings expected of your typical demon. They were feathered – more angelic seeming than demonic.
Before I know it he’s jumped off the balcony, soaring twenty stories above the city, at roughly 60 miles per hour. It’s exhilarating. Driving at sixty is nothing like flying at sixty…such a rush! We land behind my dormitory (side note: how did he know where I live?) and his wings disappear. AS a thank you, I give him a peck on the cheek and bid him a good night, heading inside and upstairs to relax as I wait for sleep to overtake me. While waiting, I get a cryptic email from Dad, asking me to dinner the following evening at seven – that he and Jessica have an announcement they would like to make. Nothing more was said about it, other than to dress formal. And then I know, that Dad is doing this so that I don’t make any sort of scene.
Come morning, I text David, Jenica and Tony to make sure they’re coming with me to meet the realtor, and after I get responses, we all agree to meet for breakfast somewhere. We chat for a while, and I make the promise to call Michael to look into my stepmother to be more. It never occurred to me to even try and ask him, as it seemed like too much of an imposition. Due to Tony’s hints, and my and Jen’s prodding, David tells a story from his childhood that’s truly an embarrassment. Poor David. Since there isn’t time to get into any other stories, we head out to meet the realtor.
I fall in love with the place, so after talking to Tony, who is going to be living with me, as well as Jen, we agree on it. We’re handed keys – apparently the realtor was given any instructions to have the place we chose be purchased outright, and put in my name – no strings attached. The guys then race off to explore, while Jen and I talk a little before exploring. And she mentioned something I’ll have to inquire more about later – something about a blood bond.
The guys stay behind to get a better feel for the house while Jenica and I go shopping for formal wear, ultimately deciding to just wear what Donovan had purchased for us. Prior to this, however, I surprised Dad at work to ask if I could bring Jen for moral support, and he agreed (since it wouldn’t be Tony). She and I get picked up by my Dad’s people around seven, and then head to the restaurant. It’s during dinner that I learn that Jessica has a son. A young emo man by the name of Tommy, a little older than myself. Who’s been “away to boarding school”.
Offer to go spend time with my stepbrother-to-be, and they’re too happy to hear that. Frankly, he dislikes Jessica every bit as much as I do – maybe more. Go back to the dorms to change, then head to the new house, whereupon I learn that the guys went out for pizza and Tony is getting ready for work, and then Jen and David disappear to the pool.
Deciding to mischievous, I hunt up Jenica’s phone, pretending to be her and inviting Vince over to the house. I know she’s torn between him and David, and thought this might help. I know she’ll get back at me for it though. Probably the guys, too. A short time later, the gang shows up with the pizza and we chill, hanging out and having fun, introducing them to Tommy. Not long after that, Vince arrives, and I direct him to David and Jen, then promptly hide behind somebody.
Jen ends up finding me several minutes later, and just shakes me a little – doesn’t seem to be too upset – or upset at all, really. I depart from the group as a whole to talk with Michael about my stepmonster-to-be after that, and that’s when things get a little worrying. He got the typical superficial stuff, but when he went deeper that’s when red flags started popping up. Men in black suits went to his house – they didn’t trace him, he was sure of that – but they somehow knew about him and where he lived, which is spooky. The suits weren’t cops or feds, but seem to have been private security – possibly Dad’s people.
Jessica herself has never been married, has a kid, and has been working for the company for forty years – always in research and development, eventually managing the department. Her age as a whole is somewhere around fifty. She doesn’t seem to be marrying Dad for the money, as she has plenty of her own. I thank him and tell him not to worry about checking in to anything else, and head back to the main room of the house, where everyone is.
We talk a bit, and the pool comes up – most everyone leaves for the pool, having fun with it. Only myself, Tommy, Vince, David and Jessica are left. There’s a little bit of one-upmanship between David and Vince, but nothing aggressive. While they talk, (because Vince and Jenica talk for a while after the manly display), I spin a phone on the floor out of some measure of boredom and feeling like I shouldn’t be there.
As I am fiddling with music on my phone while doing this, Tommy pulls out an mp3 player and speaker from his pocket for me to play, so I hit shuffle and let it play in the background. It’s a lot of emo style music but hey, it’s at least noise, right? It’s around this time that Vince makes a comment concerning my spinning of the phone, saying that in his day, they used to use a bottle. Jen get a grin and runs off, returning shortly thereafter with a bottle. We’re just getting started to play when Mai comes in and sits down to join us.
E;even rounds in total, and it went like this:
Round 1 Jenica to Mai
When we finish, there’s an embarrassing moment. From the direction of the front door is clapping – it’s Donovan, with a Ben peeking around the corner. Thoroughly embarrassed as full realization hits, I grab my clothes and quickly pull them on. As the guys (Ben, Tony, David, Tommy and Wyatt), head into the kitchen for a beer, Jenica heads off to the upstairs, presumably to shower.
Vince, Donovan and I are left alone. We talk a little – mainly what I can recall is Donovan stating it was an impressive performance, and that he may have to think of other work for me. Though he is at least clear to specify no prostitution – just that there are many ways to get a man to talk. He leaves then, bidding Ben to come along, which the poor guy really does not want to do, so I mention that he can stay, it isn’t an issue – maybe get some more up to speed lessons in. Donovan relents and leaves without Ben.
I head into the kitchen to get some water – David goes to get a cold shower, and Vince heads to the pool. So I find myself with just Tony and Ben. Is this my punishment for texting as Jenica earlier? Maybe – I don’t know. We talk for a little bit before others join us, and we say goodbye to most of the gang for the night, as it’s past curfew for Christian, and others need to be getting home as well, since it’s late.
At one point, I ask Tony why he’s home so early, and he mentions an unscheduled shipment came in. He would have let me know about it, but he never knew it was coming until it was, well, there. Ben inquires about staying over for the night, and I agree, and even offer him a place to stay, since he mentions that staying here would be better than the shelter. Tony feels bad for jabbing at him and offers to let him stay with us as well, which Ben is grateful for – the only thing he seems to regret is not being able to be there for the children any longer.
Ben departs to get a shower before bedding down for the evening. Tony and I head to the room we decided on as ours earlier, and Jen and Vince head off somewhere as well, all of us calling it a night.
Long post! Hopefully nothing of this length in the future, but it depends on what happens.
