Trish looked a little apprehensive as she left Vince’s house and headed for the car. “Do you think Emily will be ok?” she said, turning to look at Chance, who smiled and helped her into the car.
“I’m sure she’ll be fine.” he said once he got into the car. “Vince has help – Lucas is fairly responsible, Jett’s been a father, and you grandfather is there too. She’s in good hands, and he’s got plenty of help.”
“Are you sure we should leave her for the whole weekend though?”
“Honey, she’ll be fine.” he said, turning the car on and put it into reverse, slowly backing out of Vince’s driveway. “Don’t forget too that Jasper is always keeping an eye on her just to keep her safe.”
“That’s true.” she said, and settled back into the seat. They drove for a bit in silence, and she finally asked.
“Wait – where are we going?”
“I booked us a cozy little place up north for a couple of days. Jsut us – none of the pressures of home, just for a couple of nights.”
“It sounds nice.”
“It will be.” he said, reaching down to his pocket to make sure the small box was still there. They drove for a while – Trish dozed a little on the way up, waking only when Chance slowed the car and pulled up to a small building.
“Wait here, I’ve got to check us in.”
“‘Kay.” she said, yawning and stretching to try and wake up.
Chance headed into the office to get the keys to their little cottage and pay, then headed back tot he car and drove until he found the place. It was small, but cozy, as promised. He parked in the gravel a small distance away, then went to the back to get their bags while Trish got out of the car.
“Do you want help?” she offered.
“I’ve got it.” he said, and headed up the steps to unlock the door. It was decorated simply yet comfortably, so it was easy to enjoy, and delighted Trish.
“I love it. How did you find the place?”
“A lot of googling.” he said honestly. He didn’t mention that this place was also run by the werewolves – it was the public end of their preserve, and he’d been paid a visit at work when he’d put in an inquiry about the place. He set their bags down while Trish explored, double checking – again- to make sure he had the ring box in his pocket.
“Let me know when you’re getting hungry, and we’ll head out to eat, okay?”
“Oh, I’ve been hungry.” she said with a little laugh. “I definitely need food.”
“Then come on, there was a recommended place in town that we can try.”
“Sounds good.” she said, and followed him out. he locked up and then they both headed for the car, and then into town to a small restaurant. It was comfort food that was served there, along with some Canadian specific dishes.
Chance spent the better part of dinner trying to figure out when to ask her, ultimately coming to the conclusion that it was a private moment and he should wait until they were at the cabin. He did get up at one point, excusing himself to the restroom. He didn’t go – he just washed his hands and mumbled a name under his breath. After a moment, Samuel appeared.
“I can’t split my attention too horribly much, you know.”
“I know…but I was wondering if…for once…you could just let us be alone?”
Samuel mulled it over. “I can put wards on the cabin so that only you and she can get through, and only I can take down.”
“I would appreciate that.”
Samuel nodded, and then disappeared. Chance headed back to Trish, and sat across from her. She’d ordered a dessert while he was gone, and was happily digging in to a piece of pie.
“Want some?”
“Sure.” he said, taking the fork from her and taking a bite. “Not bad.” he said. Dinner finished with relative calm and quiet, though Trish did check her phone a couple of times out of anxiety.
“Honey, she’s fine.” he said after her third check.
“Sorry.” she said, a bit sheepish. Chance called over the waitress and got the check, paid, and left a generous tip. Once the bill and tip were settled, they headed for the car, then back to the cottage. Once inside they cuddled together on the couch for a while, just listening to the noises the night made through the open windows. After a while, Chance shifted, turning to look at Trish.
“Trish?”
“Yea?”
“There’s something I want to say. I…you know I love you, and I love Emily. I’ve already committed to helping you raise her…and I’m committed to you. So I want to ask..” he reached into his pocket and pulled out the ring box, held it in front of her and opened it. “Will you commit to me?”
Trish put a hand to her mouth and tears welled in her eyes. “Does this mean what I think it means?”
Chance nodded, and she threw her arms around him. “Of course! Yes!” she said, sitting back happily. Chance took the ring out of the box and placed it on the ring finger of her left hand. She squeezed his hand after he put the ring on it.
“It’s beautiful. Thank you.”
“I should be thanking you.” he said, leaning in for a kiss. She gave him a very passionate kiss back.
“Bed?”
“For sleep or other?”
“For sleep. Much as I would love for you to fuck me silly, I’m tired, so it’ll have to wait until tomorrow.”
“Noted.” he said, and scooped her up, carrying her back into the bedroom and laid her on the bed. They both changed, and crawled into bed for sleep. Both knew though, that tomorrow was going to contain more activity then they’d seen in nearly a year….
