Sir Mister

Mandy turned in for the night, hugging her stuffed bear close to her. Sir Mister had been given to her by her dad when she was just five, after he’d been away for a while. Ever since, Sir Mister was her source of comfort when things got bad, or too difficult to handle. The last time she’d held Sir Mister like this was when he mom was still alive, after she’d had a bad episode. Mandy never told how bad those episodes really got because she didn’t want her Dad to feel bad about having to go away. Now though, she suspected he always knew just how bad things had gotten.

She rolled over, still keeping Sir Mister close as she tried not to think, and failed. She didn’t know how to handle what she’d been told today. It was too much to handle at once, she felt. She couldn’t be mad at her Dad for lying about his job to her. Though it hurt a little that he had lied, she understood why he had to, and hoped beyond hope that her Dad wouldn’t get into any serious trouble for telling her about what he actually did.

Dad just didn’t seem like the CIA type to her, though when she thought back over the years, she could kind of see it, if she really looked at her memories. Not in everyday things…but little things, like how he handled stress or how he behaved when he was angry or trying to get her to tell the truth.

Then there was the other news. The news that vampires were real, and her current boyfriend was one of them. She’d confirmed this – she had to know for sure, it was just too far fetched. While she didn’t ask for proof, she did get confirmation, and she had no reason to believe anyone would lie to her. After all, her Dad hadn’t wanted to in the first place, had he?

Four people she knew were vampires, and one other worked for one. But who else? How careful should she be from now on? She felt a touch paranoid, and hugged Sir Mister closer. She didn’t like feeling this way; she was happier not knowing. It wasn’t like she didn’t get why she was told – it just made things that much more difficult to deal with.

She sighed heavily, unable to sleep with all these thoughts jumbled up in her head. Quietly, she got out of bread, bringing Sir Mister with her, and sat down at her computer. If she was going to know, she might as well dive in. She brought up Google’s homepage, and started to do some research. She looked up vampire legends for common threads, and tried doing basic Google searches on people she’d met, just to learn a little more about them.

“Well Sir Mister.” she said quietly, so as not to wake Michael. “Looks like I’m in over my head, assuming any of this is true.” she picked up the bear and held him again, before pulling up World of Warcraft and playing little with the sound off, until she got tired – whenever that may be.
