“So how’s life been since you moved in with Jett?” Adrienne teased at Lucas.
Lucas smiled a little. “Quieter than you might think. No, we don’t share a room – I’ve got my own. You guys should come out sometime.”
“We just might.” Jen said.
“Quiet can’t be any fun.” Keven said, with a note of distaste in his voice.
“Says you. I don’t have to worry about drunks getting in the way of my studies.” he looked steadily at Kevin, and the girls laughed.
“How did exams go for you?” Adrienne had asked.
“I thought I wouldn’t pass for a while there, since I’d missed some classes from being sick. But I came through alright.”
“Way to go Lucas.” Jen said.
“So tell me…has your sex life been any better?” Adrienne grinned, and Ken swatted at her on Lucas’ behalf.
“My sex life is good, thanks.” Lucas stuck his tongue out at her.
“What’s it like living with him? And that other guy?” Jen asked.
“Who? Vince? Vince is good people. Very laid back kind of guy. Not much rattles him, as far as I can tell. I know he’s loyal to his circle of friends though, and apparently that now includes me.”
“Okay, but what about Jett? I mean, that’s what we really want to know.” Kevin said.
“Jett’s not a bad person to live with. He works during the day, usually longish hours, and it’s mechanic work, so it’s sometimes a hard job, and often a dirty one. When he comes home he usually showers and relaxes, often resorting to his music. So no, we don’t do stuff together as much as you might think. He does make time for me though.”
“Has his relationship with his boyfriend and girlfriend been an issue at all?” Kevin asked pointedly.
“Well, he hasn’t seen his boyfriend for a little while, nor his girlfriend either, as far as I know. He’s been busy.”
“At least he’s spending time with you. You deserve that.” Kevin remarked.
Lucas just nodded. Not for the world could he tell them about how hard he’d been working trying to learn supernatural abilities, and how patient and encouraging Jett was being with him. He absently rubbed his throat where the small scar was from when his throat had been slit. He didn’t remember it at all, but the thought of it made him want to shudder. Still…he could continue to live the life that he was used to, to an extent, and he was grateful for that every day. He took out his phone, and glanced at it.
“It’s been great catching up to you guys, but I’ve got some errands I need to attend to.”
“Okay man, later.” Kevin said, getting up and giving Lucas a bro hug.
Lucas stepped out of the student union into the bright July sunshine. He flinched instinctively before shielding his eyes and heading for the car Jett always let him use. He had no particular errands, but it was a convenient excuse to get away from his friends. He drove aimlessly for a while, his destination ultimately being the park. He wandered the trails for a while, letting his thoughts wander. Inevitably, they wandered to Brandon and Jacqueline. He didn’t know just what they thought of him, and he knew relatively little about each of them in return. All he knew for certain was that he didn’t want to be on their bad sides – it would make things with Jett awkward and potentially difficult if he were at outs with them.
He’d reached the bridge when he resolved to gift each of them with a token of respect. For he did respect them, and the history they had with Jett. Jacqueline’s history with Jett stretched further back than Jett’s history with Brandon did, but he thought he could come up with suitable tokens. Satisfied with this conclusion, he thought further on what else he knew – then decided to call Deacon.
Deacon worked for Marcus, and Marcus had been the one to hunt up the information on Jacqueline, so maybe he could get Deacon to give him that information, and he could use that to present Jacqueline with something that reminded her of home, or even a family tree to see if their were any modern relations from her and Jett’s daughter.
He called Deacon then, and made arrangements for the information,Deacon only agreeing to it once he was sure Marcus had no need for the information. He was to meet with Deacon at the Silver Cafe in an hour. Satisfied he went to the meeting, and waited patiently, watching the other patrons until Deacon arrived, whereupon he flagged him down.
Deacon made his way over, a manila envelope in hand. “I printed out everything Marcus had on her. Why do you want the information anyway?”
“I’ve got a project in mind. I just want to do something nice for her, basically, because she and my boyfriend are in love.” if he could have, his face would have gone slightly red from calling Jett his boyfriend. He still had a hard time realizing that he really was a part of Jett’s life.
“Well, with any luck Marcus won’t find out I gave it to you. Not that I think he’ll care.” Deacon said. “Anything else?”
“No, this is enough. Thanks again.”
“Sure.”
With that Deacon left, and Lucas stuffed the manila envelope into his backpack and headed home to do some research. Ancestry.com would be extremely helpful in regards to what he thought would mean most to her. Brandon would be harder. He didn’t want to ask Jett about Brandon, but maybe he could ask Vince and get some ideas that way.
Once home, he headed for his room, closed the door, and sat down in front of his computer to begin the research based on her name. It proved difficult at first, but he was able to ultimately track down a birth record of a Josephine Allon, mother Jacqueline Dubois. And he stemmed from there, filling out a family tree and poring over records of birth, marriage and death over the next few days, until he got to present day. There weren’t many currently living relatives, though perhaps that was all for the better. Still, that wasn’t up to him to decide.
It was the night of Chance’s party when Lucas decided he’d ask Vince about Brandon. He waited until after Jett had left to go see the former, before turning to his grandsire and asking.
“Vince? I’ve got a kind of awkward question to ask you…”
